2013 Project 52, Week 9 - The Things We Do

Week 9: February 26 - March 4

Lower Manhattan after sundown, from Brooklyn Bridge Park
I trekked down to Brooklyn this Saturday to catch the Manhattan skyline at sunset. I wholly underestimated how cold it would be, and I quickly found myself trying to operate with numb hands. It was an unpleasant time.

I set up on the pier next to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory with my new tripod. I managed to get off a few shots before the camera alerts me that the battery is about to die. Perfect. So between the people milling about jumping into my shot, the loud wedding party right next to me taking photos with flash, my rapidly numbing fingers, and the barges and boats jutting into the frame, my window of opportunity and my patience wore down quickly.

After I got my shots, I rubbed my hands furiously trying to return some feeling to my fingers; in doing so, I'm convinced, I worked my wedding band off of my ring finger and onto the pier. It was so cold, windy, and loud that I guess it's plausible I didn't notice it. I have turned the apartment upside down looking for it, and I even returned to the pier later that night with a flashlight to retrace my steps, all to no avail. So, I made it four years and ten months of marriage with a wedding band probably a half or whole size too large before finally losing it (I'm still holding out hope that it's hiding somewhere around the house, but that hope is fading fast. We went ahead and got a replacement. The 30-day return clock to find the original and return the new wedding band is now ticking...). The things we do for the stuff we're interested in...

...Which is also to say that I was mostly sorely disappointed with the results of this photography outing; most of the most gorgeous-looking shots I took look out of focus or shaky when blown up to the computer screen; it appears the windy East River night not only potentially contributed to losing my wedding band but also adversely affected my tripod's stability. It was doubly disappointing, then.

I know, you win some and lose some; it felt like a lot of losing this weekend.
